The BROOKS Approach to Youth Consultation: 5 Innovative Ways our team has engaged young people

The BROOKS Way of Doing Things

We do things a little differently around here. At BROOKS, we recognise that the perspectives and aspirations of young people are pivotal in shaping inclusive and impactful community initiatives. In our unwavering commitment to fostering meaningful engagement, we’ve developed a unique approach to youth consultation that goes beyond traditional methods. We delve into five innovative strategies employed by our team to ensure the active involvement of young individuals in the decision-making processes that directly impact their lives.

From empowering musical expressions through the Parramatta Youth Choir to addressing unemployment challenges with the Kick Start Café, and fostering intergenerational connections in the Together2 program, our approach reflects a dynamic commitment to inclusivity, creativity, and community-driven change. Join us on a journey through these initiatives as we spotlight the diverse and inspiring ways in which BROOKS engages with and empowers the voices of the youth.

Musical Empowerment: Parramatta Youth Choir

The BROOKS approach begins with finding innovative ways to foster connection and belonging throughout the communities we work in.

The Parramatta Youth Choir serves as a dynamic platform for young individuals, offering them an avenue for creative expression and social connection. Through this initiative, we provide free access to music learning, enabling youth to not only develop their musical talents but also forge meaningful relationships with peers.

The recent highlight of performing at the Riverside Theatre not only showcased the talent within the group but also highlighted the positive impact of music in fostering a sense of community among vulnerable youth.

In addressing the pressing challenges of social exclusion and unemployment faced by youth, BROOKS developed the Kick Start Café alongside PAYCE.

This innovative social enterprise goes beyond traditional employment programs by offering free hospitality training, certification, and tangible employment pathways. By involving young people in the development and launch of the café, we empower them with valuable skills and the confidence to navigate the workforce.

The Kick Start Café is not just a place of employment; it is a stepping stone towards a brighter future for the youth in the Riverwood community.

Intergenerational Connections: Together2 Program

Together2's successful Intergenerational Program bridges divide between generation to promote social inclusion and meaningful connection.

Together2’s successful Intergenerational Program bridges divide between generation to promote social inclusion and meaningful connection.

Recognising the profound impact of intergenerational activities on youth engagement, BROOKS developed the Together2 program.

This initiative brings together disengaged high school students and the elderly, fostering meaningful connections that bridge generational gaps. By creating a space for shared experiences and mutual understanding, Together2 not only enhances the social fabric of the community but also provides valuable support and inclusion for young individuals. This innovative approach ensures that our communities thrive through diverse and interconnected relationships.

Drug & Alcohol Awareness Youth Community Forum: Dundas Neighbourhood Centre

BROOKS actively engages with the youth in Telopea through the creation of the Drug & Alcohol Awareness Youth Community Forum. By designing a program that speaks directly to the concerns and interests of young people, we provide a safe and informative platform for meaningful dialogue.

Collaborating with key service providers ensures that the forum is relevant and impactful, addressing the pressing issue of substance awareness in a way that resonates with the youth and promotes a culture of openness and education.

Community Support through Meal Share: Melrose Park Urban Renewal

Melrose Park Meal Share Program brings local community together to support most vulnerable community members experiencing food insecurity.

During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, BROOKS demonstrated its commitment to community well-being through the Meal Share Program in the Melrose Park Urban Renewal project. Working closely with local networks and service providers, we identified vulnerable families struggling to access food.

By providing free weekly meals, we not only addressed immediate needs but also established a framework for ongoing community support. The Meal Share Program exemplifies BROOKS’s dedication to understanding and responding to the evolving needs of communities, especially during times of crisis.
